5. The Covenant Relation Between God and Man

Why study the Covenant?

It is complicated. Everyone has their own ideas about what it is. And what difference does it make?

Yes! Yes! Yes!  But it is complicated only because of the misunderstandings of well meaning people. When a person understands the covenant, it is very simple, and very important. The covenant shows the relationship God desires with His people.

The covenant promise is: "I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people."  This promise is repeated throughout the Bible.  It is referred to every time you see the phrase, "The Lord your God" or even just "The Lord." The covenant theme underlies every doctrine and every event in the Bible.

Satan hates the covenant.  Satan wants us to worship him, not God.  He has tried to destroy the covenant;  but we want to know the covenant and the God of the covenant.

In the covenant, God has pledged to support His creation.  No matter what happens, God is there to bless, strengthen, support, and to restore Creation to His purpose of happiness, perfection, and unsurpassed beauty.

When man sinned, he passed under the condemnation of death.  In the sovereign justice of God, this could not be avoided. The law of God expresses His character, and cannot be changed.  But the Lawgiver Himself could take the penalty of the law, Himself die the death that man deserved, and restore all that was lost at Eden.

It is the gospel of Christ, from beginning to end.  The doctrines, the stories, the teachings of the Bible all center on Jesus Christ, the focus of the Covenant and our hope for the future. In short, the covenant, the promises, the pledge of God underlie all we know about Him. The blessings we enjoy, the lives we lead, our hope for the future all center on Christ.

His promise is: "I will be to them a God," and we will have no other God before Him.  And He will write the law upon our hearts, and make of us His people.
