Abraham, the Friend of God

As the covenant was presented to men, there was increasing revelation of the purpose of God.
To Adam and Eve were promised an enmity against evil, written on their hearts; and a coming Redeemer who would restore all that was lost, and destroy evil. To Noah was promised immediate salvation for him and his family. After the Flood he was promised that life would become stable again, and that there would be no more flood.
And now to Abraham: It wasn't long after the flood that sin became widespread again. There is evidence that a knowledge of God persisted, maybe for many years, but it was corrupted and mixed with idolatry. God found a man whose motives were pure; who served Him faithfully. God chose him to be the father of a nation who would preserve a knowledge of God in the world, and through whom the Messiah would come.
It was to Abraham that the covenant was given in greatest detail, and Abraham's descendants lived under variations of this covenant up to the time of Christ. It was still the Everlasting Covenant, but specific promises of nationhood and land were given to prepare the way for the coming Messiah.
But we are getting ahead of the story. . . . . . ....
